so backwards compat was a selling point at launch for the ps3, but now it's not included in any ps3.  if you google 'Ps3 backward compat' you will see numerous rumors about a Ps2 emulation patent sony recently filed for.  So I think it probably will be coming back in a firmware update within the next year.  The thread below starts a rumor about this happening in the next firmware update... that would set Sony up good for the holiday season coming up but i doubt it because it just sounds too good to be true.

so what games would i actually want to pick up if ps3 backwards compat came back?  maybe "Samurai Shodown Anthology" hehe... can't really think of anything else.  And I might even hold out on that one because it doesn't have online play... in the hopes that they would re-release it for next gen consoles (only came out on Wii and Ps2 for some odd reason)... really what else is there for a Ps2 we would actually want?

Never really played much PS2 exclusive stuff, since I had the Xbox.  But I've always wanted to try Katamari Damaci, God of War and a few others.

yeah katamari seems interesting... think i might get God of War for my PSP... but they'll probably come out with a katamari for ps3... 

yeah i have a few games for my xbox that i would still play... MK Armageddon comes to mind... and Street Fighter Anniversary collection is also a great compilation game.  but overall i think you were right about the fact that backwards compat shouldn't matter so much in the long run because they re-hash and re-package so much these days... all the old titles will probably be downloadable on the new consoles anyways... it seems like thats a good way to keep making money off of old games that are still quality.
