So, my bro in law just turned 18 and is a high quality geek.  He has been yearning to build his own computer for some time now and for his birthday his parents are going to pay all the parts necessary to do so.  Let me give some info and then we can all go buckwild on newegg, woot!  He loves games, and is huge on gfx and how the game looks.  He is also interested in doing game developing.  Does a lot of picture/video editing.  Those are all the specifics i can think of right now, plus i am too excited to go to newegg that i can't think straight.  So, let's see what we can put together for him.

wow... good timing.  In today's market, he should be able to get a killer rig for about $800.

Does he need monitor, keyboard, mouse, other peripherals?  Or, can he just blow it out on the hardware?

I looked at what he had on his wish list and he didn't have any of those things, so maybe he will foot the bill for those???  I will have to ask him tonight.  He also didn't have a case, power supply, fans, etc., so i will have to sit down with him and figure some stuff out.

clearly his next steps are going to be testing out this mac daddy system on some premier games.  allow me to make some suggestions:

Battlefield 2
Vanguard
Command and Conquer Tiberian Dawn

and he will need to get Rise of Nations because I will revoke his internet privileges otherwise.  while you're under my house mr. 18 yr old gamer fancypants you will DO AS I SAY!!

Ok, forgetting budget here's a first pass:

COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel, SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ - Retail
MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
COOLMAX CR-550B ATX 550W "140mm Fan" Power Supply - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600 - Retail

$1047.94 through Newegg.

Thats a Core 2 Duo 6600 with 2GB DDR2 800 Memory, a GeForce 8800 GTS with 640MB GDDR3,  320GB SATA drive, and a really nice SLI-ready motherboard for just over $1k.

Just toss in a CD/DVD RW drive and OS of your choice and you're there.

Definitely count on him having the C&C series, he loves em

I nominate this for quote of the year:

i agree with monkey, but i would recommend mushkin or corsair with the RAM  and go for a high performance RAM... for the price it is very worth it considering processors/gpu are overpowered these days and the bottleneck is often the RAM

The G.SKILL ram above is performance, dual-channel, low-latency memory.  Picked because of it's instant-off savings and very good reviews.

if you really wanna make a video-editing machine, you can't use a Geforce or Radeon card, instead you can attain higher performance with DDR2 overclocker RAM and an nVidia Quadro, you know, those 1500 dollar cards.... anyway... it's his choice, gaming, or devolpment. you can't have both.

PS point him to www.blender.org (latest 244 version out). blender is a 3D design program that will interest any geek. assuming you haven't built this system yet.

Another note, the Geforce and redeon are different from the Quadro and FireGL series because they're built on the OpenGL standard, NOT directX and direct3D, so, you can't game with them.

Here
is what Dan has come up with so far.  I have not even had a second to look over it.  Hopefully i will have some time today i can go over it and give him some feedback.  He does have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse already.  I have a case i am giving him, but am open to recommendations still on cases.

My thoughts:

1.  Get an upgrade version of Vista - it's much cheaper and you should be able to find an xp disk somewhere?  Or get this one:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116196
2.  7900GS - I don't remember that being a very great card.
3.  That motherboard got a lot of mixed reviews.  Was there something in particular he was hoping to take advantage of on that board?  What about getting a motherboard/CPU combo from Tiger Direct?

Why Intel over AMD?

3)The one thing i looked at so far was the MOBO and the reviews are pretty harsh on some of them. It didn't seem to bother him, but it worries me. Need to find a replacement i think.

IDK why intel

1)Upgrade version sounds like a very good idea, will have to go that route

2)Don't know much about that card, and haven't looked at it yet tbh
