it is a well known fact around my house that me and hardware don't get along... and i don't mean pc hardware.  i mean wood and nails.  in spite of this i have decided i need to build one of these:

expect i want a mini version that you can sit down to play... i'm going to lock in my x-arcade instead of making the controls from scratch...  this should only take me about 5 years to complete.

Wow dude, that's pretty hot.  $1,000 over the next 5 years.  Not a bad investment  Smiley

i'm not going to spend $1000.... i don't want some lame arcade screen in there...  i'm just going to use that frame in the first picture and cut it in half so you can sit down to play... the slap on some MDF board... frame out the edges a little so it looks perty... then throw a PC in there with a monitor...

First of all

lame arcade screen

There.  That's better

Secondly, better figure out some little drawers and possible mini fridge to store soda and snacks.  If you make those adjustments make 2 and i will come pick up the extra in 5 years.

So, i am driving to work today and what do i see in the bed of the truck in front of me?  Oh yeah, it was an old school arcade game that had a homebuilt casing.  I almost crashed into the truck to get a closer look.  Awesome.

ok so instead of attempting to design my own arcade cabinet i went the nice and sleazy route and hooked up a MAME machine to my projector yesterday.  playing Killer Instinct 96" x 50" is pretty flipping awesome.  i played a few minutes of Double Dragon and some Dig Dug...  It's pretty slick as I don't think I'd use the arcade cabinet as much as I can use this PC... I can stream music on it because it is hooked into my 5.1 Receiver and also I plan on hooking up some Rise of Nations and Wc3 asap.  So in short: Projector > Arcade Cabinet

Projector > Arcade Cabinet
Sad, but true.  But it will still be missing that vintage feeling that you get from huddling over an arcade screen and finally after you beat Killer Instinct your back is a little sore and everything but your fingers are stiff...good times

yeah... i just can't justify the amount of work and the amount of space used by an arcade cabinet when i can get a superior experience using the projector and my X-Arcade.  It does remind me of the tournament setup they used to have at the arcade when fighting games were big though... they'd hook them up to some 60" rear projection tv and stand the joysticks about 6 feet in front of the screen.  now i just need a stand for my x-arcade.... hmmmm
